Naturism in Germany
Organized Naturism was called Freikörperkultur FKK (free body culture) in Germany, the country of its origin. It first came onto the scene round 1900.
It was a time of awakening, of shedding stiff Victorian collars and the accompanying values. There came a need for lightness, air, a more natural style of living, as well as less restrictive clothing.
The naturist movement grew quickly and became quite voluminous, with clusters of clubs close to the big cities. However, when Hitler came to power (1933), most organizations (also abroad) became a club for bad boys.

Naturism History USA and Canada
According to available records, social nudism first appeared in Canada about 1939. With no apparent connection, it seems to have started at that time in both British Co1umbia and Ontario.
It was then that the Van Tan Club found its site on the side of Grouse Mountain, overlooking Vancouver. In this same year, a nudist group formed in southern Ontario; but their resort, Norhaven, about ten miles east of North Bay, did not open until 1948.

Naturism in France
Naturism originated in France in the 1920's, under the impulse of hygienist doctors and enthusiasts for this groundbreaking spirit for a healthier lifestyle.
In the 1940's, through the influence of Albert LECOQ, nudism, hitherto elitist, became popular and changed its name to naturalism. Nudity is one of the essential components.
