Rembrandt van Rijn, the master draftsman

Rembrandt van Rijn, the master draftsman

Rembrandt could draw with equal from his imagination. Actually, he saw hardly any line at all when he draw this picture. He saw plane meeting plane, color meeting color .... He was extraordinarily versed in anatomy and he knew his perspective.
Robert Beverly Hale (curator MOMA) : Rembrandt was the best.
Artists spent several years training as apprentices to an established artist, while mingling with other students in his studio. They sometimes completed their training with another teacher—as did Rembrandt.

A Studio Scene : Rembrandt and his pupils

A Studio Scene : Rembrandt and his pupils

A drawing now in Weimar (Klassik Stiftung Weimar) affords an interesting glimpse into the atmosphere and organization of the studio. It shows a female model posing for a group of young men—it was unusual for girls to be apprenticed to painters with a view to an artistic career. What emerges from this drawing is the sense of a group, working together. Rembrandt corrected and reworked his students’ drawings to indicate where they needed to improve; the teacher’s role in the creative process was a decisive one.
Rembrandt collected drawings of Annibale Carracci, Albrecht Dürer and Paul Rubens. Not only for to sell, but most to use for copying the composition.

Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh

Van Gogh during his years in Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise developed a style of his own and made some of his most impressive drawings. Japanese prints were an important source of inspiration to him. Van Gogh’s drawn oeuvre – which ranges from fluent pen drawings to works drawn in colour – includes preparatory studies for paintings and copies of painted work, as well as drawings made as independent works of art. In this period his drawings were most powerfull.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec

He was declared to be "The soul of Montmartre", the Parisian quarter where he made his home. He often portrayed life at the Moulin Rouge and other Montmartre and Parisian cabaret and theaters, and, particularly, in the brothels that he frequented avidly. He lived there for long periods among the women that adopted him wholeheartedly and made him their confidant and the witness of their most intimate acts that inspired the lesbian scenes of many of his drawings and paintings. He painted singer Yvette Guilbert, Louise Weber and dancer Jane Avril.
His art and particular his way of drawing was a great example for other atists.

Raoul Dufy

Raoul Dufy and Pascin

Raoul Dufy was a fellow student with Georges Braque. The impressionist landscapists, such as Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro, influenced him. Dufy's cheerful oils and watercolours depict yachting scenes, sparkling views of the French Riviera, chic parties and musical events. The optimistic and fashionably decorative and illustrative nature of much of his work has meant that his output is less highly critically valued than artists who treat a wider range of social concerns.

Pascin

Pascin

Despite the constant partying, Pascin created thousands of watercolors and sketches, plus drawings and caricatures that he sold to various newspapers and magazines. He studied the art of drawing at the Academy Colarossi and, like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec before him, he drew upon his surroundings and his friends, both male and female, as subjects. He wanted to become a serious painter but in time he became deeply depressed over his inability to achieve critical success with his efforts.
On the day of Pascin’s funeral, June 7, 1930, all the galleries in Paris closed. Thousands of acquaintances from the artistic community along with dozens of waiters and bartenders from the restaurants and saloons he had frequented, all dressed in black walked behind his coffin the three miles from his studio at 36 boulevard de Clichy to the Cimetière de Saint-Ouen.
> His work is still to buy in the galleries of the Rue de Seine in Paris
